Quarantine has hit everybody pretty hard. Our normal life activities have been diminished to the bare minimum. Everybody is afraid to go out, and quite rightfully so with the rise in COVID 19 cases across the world. People had to adapt to their new lifestyles, doing things that you wouldn’t have thought could be done remotely or at home.
Unfortunately, the medical sector (particularly dentists) has been hit the hardest. It is no secret that dental treatments carry a huge risk of transmission of the virus. For that reason, most dental offices (including our own) have had to shut down during this crisis period.
But fear not, our team at Aurora Borealis orthodontics are still here for you. We know that braces need particular care and frequent visits to your dentist. Since that is not possible right now, we offer you a few tips for caring for your orthodontic treatment during COVID 19 quarantine.
Braces is particular need extra care
Braces wearers live with their appliances for a long time. Most treatments take anywhere between 6 months to 2 years, and during that period, a lot of care instructions are given by your orthodontist. Instructions for brushing, flossing and regular attendance to the office are all part of the package, but since that can’t be done right now, we have to bend the rules a bit for your safety.
Tips for caring for your orthodontic treatment during COVID 19 quarantine
Whatever you used to do before, needs to be done with even more care now. Normally, during your follow-up visits, your orthodontist would check if you actually follow his\her instructions, and give you proper advice accordingly. Nowadays a visit is difficult, and so it is up to you to make sure you take proper care of your teeth and braces.
Step up your oral hygiene regimen
As we said, your orthodontist currently has very little direct oversight on your oral hygiene. It is now completely up to you to make sure that your braces do not adversely affect the health of your teeth and gums. If not, expect some serious complications as decay or gingivitis once your braces are removed. Brushing twice daily is a given, and we cannot overstate the importance of flossing. Adding some Fluoride containing mouthwash would also certainly help, but you need to ask your dentist’s advice before that. Finally, whatever food that was prohibited beforehand is even more so now. Sticky foods like gum and toffee are a big No-No. Hard food as nuts and chips should be avoided at all costs.
