Braces Toronto ON

February 4, 2021

Ever wonder who wants braces?

Shockingly, the answer is .. everybody these days. Everyone – young and old, child or adult – are requesting braces. This all stems from the fact that everybody wants a more beautiful smile. In fact, studies have shown that people with amazing smiles get better jobs, have better marriages, are more successful, and lead a happier life overall. For that, a great smile is a necessity in today’s world. Braces are capable of straightening your teeth, so whether you have a gap in your teeth, crooked teeth, overbite or any other problem with your teeth’s arrangement, braces is the solution for you. Follow our guide to find out where to find an orthodontist for braces Toronto ON trusts.

Who needs braces?

Let’s get one thing clear from the start: braces is a cosmetic procedure. You might find it strange, but it truly is, since it’s main purpose is to give you a more beautiful smile. With that being said, then nobody truly “needs” braces. You just would get them if you want straighter teeth. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule, where braces are a need rather than a want, such as:

  1. Jaw Size mismatch:
In normal situations, the upper jaw is slightly ahead of the lower jaw. This is the best position for the muscles to work in unison, producing movements required for eating, chewing and speech. When your jaw sizes are mismatched (meaning the upper jaw is too big, or the lower jaw is too small, or vice versa) it creates problems with that mechanism. In that case, braces is not a cosmetic option, but a therapeutic one.
  2. Open bite/ Deep bite (AKA underbite & overbite):
When your front teeth are apart even if your back teeth are touching each other, this is known as an underbite. Reversely, if they are too much in contact, this is known as an overbite. In most cases, these present no problems other than the looks. However, in some cases, the overbite may be so severe that your upper teeth injure the lower lip, or the underbite is too open so that you can’t bite or chew. Again in these cases, braces are immediately needed.

What are the types of braces available?

  • Metallic braces:
The oldest in the book, and certainly wanted and effective. Metallic braces may look unsightly, but they do their job.
  • Clear braces:
A bit of an upgrade from metal braces when it comes to looks. They work the same method and produce the same results, but the brackets are clear ceramic rather than metal. It is a great solution for people who appreciate the ease of metal braces, but can’t stand the appearance.
  • Lingual braces:
The braces are applied to the inner surface of the teeth. This means – to anyone looking directly your way – you have nothing on the outer side of the teeth. An invisible option, but is quite uncomfortable.
  • Invisalign:
The ultimate solution to the appearance problem. With no brackets or wires, Invisalign is certainly the top choice, especially for adults.
